About Unorthodox Hacking
A few years ago, I started writing articles for Security Focus. I then performed technical editing and chapter contributions to the book Uberhacker II. This was a great experience and got me thinking about writing a hacking book, but work and personal life got in the way. Finally, I started writing a book named Unorthodox Hacking, and part way through it I discovered that the information was outdated as soon as I wrote it, and it was difficult to keep revising the finished chapters to include the newest exploits. Needless to say, it was a never ending project.
In May 2006, the Unorthodox Hacking web site came into being. I took a few of the finished chapters and decided to move them to a better delivery mechanism which is more suited to handle the nimble and dynamic nature of cyber security. Thus the Unorthodox Hacking podcasts were born. My goal is to teach you how exploits and attacks are performed, and more importantly, how to mitigate against them. I have learned from past experiences that demonstrating a hack along with the mitigations is far more influentual than simply talking or writing about an exploit and how to prevent it. There is no substitute for a real demonstration!
All hacks and attacks are presented for demonstration purposes only, and are performed within a closed environment unless otherwise noted.
